Creativity vs. Consistency
And you thought Batman vs. Superman was an epic matchup!
Speaking of Superman, I’ve found my Kryptonite and it’s name is consistency. And I don’t think I’m alone. As creatives, we stoke our engines with novelty rather than continuity, possibility more than precedent. Efficiency is great, but personally I love the thrill of reinventing the wheel… again, and again, and…
Ok, I’ll admit that I may have a problem. And in fact, my reluctance to focus on and build models of consistency into my life might actually interfere with my creative pursuits. The standout for me is the idea that building consistency into our creative life results in more psychological space to explore, make mistakes, and occasionally, stumble on something good: consistency lightens the pressure to be brilliant. Because let’s face it, it’s not ALL going to be good. The more consistently I can output work, the more comfortable I’ll be in filtering, knowing that there is more where that came from.
